Do you know the lightbulb joke? It usually starts like this: “How many germans do you need to change a lightbulb?”. Well, we currently live in this joke. “How many dentists in Panama do you need to fix one tooth?”. Kira ran away from the dentist number 1 (while he was still drilling her tooth) for a good reason. The dentist number 2 looked at that tooth and said it’s badly damaged and now needs to be extracted. So we went to the dentist number 3 who said that it’s still OK and can be fixed and referred her to the dentist number 4 for the procedure. And while filling endless registration questionnaires we found a question at one of the dentist’s offices: ‘Who is financially responsible for the patient?’. “Write Bill Gates”, Sven said.

Quiz: What can Sven cook?
Quiz Friday! Here is Sven cooking dinner. Traveling on budget means a lot of cooking instead of eating at the restaurants. Before the journey Sven’s knowledge of cooking consisted of knowing how to warm things up. After 2 years he became quite a cook! Question: How many different dishes can Sven make by himself from scratch?

Lost in Panama City
We got lost in Panama City on our arrival. Terribly, terribly lost. Suddenly, we were standing in the middle of 4 lanes motorway. Sven was screaming at Kira that she nearly killed him. Kira was screaming at Sven that it was his responsibility to find the safe way to the hostel. And then we were standing in the most dangerous district of Panama City, still terribly lost. After many more screams and tears we arrived to the hostel. We were battered. Why did we go to Panama City, anyway? Oh, right – to visit the dentist and fix teeth. We went to the dentist and found out that it would cost our new montly budget to fix them. There is a chance that insurance will not cover it. And once more, off we go to reinvent the wheel and find new solutions for unsolvable situations. Yet another life’s flat tire…
Rain in Panama
Just a regular rain in Panama City. See that pick up truck? There is 10 cm of water in his trunk…
Week 97: Crossing a Continent
Week 97. Crossing a continent from East to West (North to South according to the map). We have reached a new continent by sailing boat. We have arrived at the same port as Colombus, when he has reached the land at his 4th voyage. This week we cycle from the Atlantic coast back to the Pacific coast. It feels different here than in South America, but we can’t really grasp what exactly. Are the people different? Is the road different? Are the trees in different shade of green? One thing for sure – here are much more rubbish lying around…
Up next: running errands in Panama City
Excerpt from Ach so schön ist Panama
“Pa-na-ma,” read Little Bear. “This crate comes from Panama, and Panama smells of bananas! Oh, Panama is the land of my dreams!” wrote Janosch in a children book ‘Trip to Panama’*. It is a book from Kira’s chlidhood and her mom used the characters of the book to feed her (‘One more spoon for Little Tiger’). It as a little story about traveling and appreciating what you have. It has one side effect though: it makes you wish to see Panama – the magical land that smells of bananas – with your own eyes. So here were are in Panama, secretly seaching for the Tigerduck under the banana trees.

Update on Tulkus Condition
“How is Tulku doing?” – Tulku was bitten on Saturday by another dog and had a small hole on her back. Nothing to worry about and it’s already healed. Besides that, Tulku is doing great! Still going blind, but nobody ever notices it. She adapted to blindness and her smelling ability became better. Now she finds things (and us) faster than before! Her legs are healed and she can walk as much as she wants. Running and jumping are still forbidden, Tulku is still ignoring that and we are still screaming ‘Tulku NO!’ when she tries to jump. On our voyage though Carribean Sea on the sailing boat Tulku surprised us a lot. We were worried that she will be scared of open water as usual, but our worries were in vain. Tulku happily sat on the deck, sniffed around the boat on her own and even went swimming several times.

Quiz: Bike Packing Time
Quiz Friday! Here is Sven, Tulku and our bikes packed for the sailing trip. 6 days on the deck, surrounded by salt water, is not very good for our metal bikes. We did our best and waterproofed them with 35 trash bags and 100 meters of duct tape. Question: How long did it take to pack them?
